Zanzibar is the obvious ending to a safari and it earns the position. The beaches on the north and east coasts are genuinely among the best in the Indian Ocean, and the island is less than two hours by air from the Serengeti.

Stone Town deserves a day of its own. It is a thousand year old Swahili trading port, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a place where Arab, Persian, Indian and African architecture are layered into the same streets. The old slave market, the Anglican cathedral built over it, the Darajani market and the carved doors are all within walking distance of each other.

Pemba, to the north, is quieter, greener and far less developed, and has the better diving. Mafia, to the south, is where whale sharks gather between October and March and is the choice for anyone who wants the reef without the crowds.
