Tarangire is built around a single river that runs through the dry season when almost everything else in the region has gone. The result, between July and October, is one of the heaviest concentrations of elephant anywhere in Tanzania, along with everything else that needs water.

It is also the most striking landscape on the northern circuit. Baobabs stand across the hills, some of them a thousand years old and wide enough that a vehicle disappears behind one. The park is quieter than Ngorongoro or the Serengeti, and often you will have a sighting to yourselves.

Birders should allow more time here than the itinerary suggests. Tarangire records over five hundred species and is one of the best dry season birding sites in East Africa.
